Biological Image Annotation
Junior Specialist (m/f/d)
Join our team of innovators, scientists and entrepreneurs. Become a PHIOneer.
At PHIO, we develop technologies for automated, label-free monitoring and analysis of cell cultures. Our interdisciplinary team brings together biology, engineering and AI to make changes in cell cultures easier to observe and quantify.
You will help create biological annotations used to develop and evaluate our image analysis methods. Initially, around 75–90% of your agreed part-time hours will be dedicated annotating and reviewing images of 2D and 3D cell cultures, including organoids. The work calls for concentration, consistency and biological judgement, particularly when images are difficult to interpret.
In time, we expect the role to include hands-on cell culture work, depending on project needs. We would discuss the scope and balance of these responsibilities with you as the role evolves.
Key Responsibilities
- Annotate cell and organoid images by outlining and classifying structures, for example as live or dead, based on morphology and signals from viability stains or fluorescent markers.
- Review and correct existing annotations and software-generated suggestions using image annotation tools.
- Work with multi-channel images and time-series data from lens-free, brightfield, and fluorescence imaging.
- Follow annotation guidelines, check your work for consistency and flag cases that require discussion with our biology and AI teams.
- Identify recurring annotation issues and provide feedback on image quality and data suitability for analysis.
Profile Requirements
- A degree in biology, biotechnology, bioinformatics or a related field, or comparable practical experience.
- A good understanding of cell morphology and experience working with microscopy images.
- Experience with biological image annotation and tools such as Fiji, Imaris, Napari or similar software is a strong advantage.
- At least one year of regular, hands-on cell culture experience is a strong advantage, particularly as the role may expand to include laboratory work.
- The ability to work carefully and consistently on detailed tasks over extended periods.
- A collaborative approach and the confidence to raise questions when information is unclear or cannot be assessed reliably.
What We Offer
- A part-time (20-30 h per week) position with close collaboration across biology, imaging and AI.
- Structured onboarding in our imaging methods, annotation tools and guidelines.
- Regular scientific exchange on challenging images and biological questions.
- The opportunity to contribute to reliable datasets for cell image analysis and, as the role develops, to take on practical work in the cell culture lab.
Apply Now
- Your current CV (highlighting relevant projects and your technical impact).
- No formal cover letter required. Instead, tell us in a few sentences about a biological image annotation or microscopy image analysis task you have worked on: what you personally did, which tools you used, and how you checked your results.
